Within the last two decades, SARS and MERS coronaviruses emerged as global health concerns causing severe acute respiratory syndromes. In December 2019, a novel coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) was identified in Wuhan, Hubei province in China. The SARS-CoV-2 genome encodes several structural proteins including the nucleocapsid protein (Nucleoprotein; Protein N), which plays a role in virion assembly through its interaction with the viral genome and the membrane protein. This key protein packages the positive strand viral RNA into a helical ribonucleocapsid. The nucleocapsid represents a valuable tool for diagnostic and vaccine production purposes.
